People frame discipline & consistency as the keys to success. Really, they’re only 2/4ths the equation. The real winning combination is discipline, consistency, observation, and the ability to pivot.

In my Waking Up at 5:55 Each Morning – Weekends Included – Was the Best Choice Ever post, I talked about waking up at 5:55 am, 7 days a week, and how amazing it was. I still stand by that post – that routine was incredible for me at the time.
It’s just what I needed coming into the new year. Sticking with it for two months boosted my self-trust and self-confidence. I proved to myself that I could stay consistent with a new habit that I’d been wanting to form since forever, for more than just two or three weeks.
And it gave me an extra two hours each day: one (Opening Hour) spent enjoying a slow morning routine, and one (Garden Hour) spent engaging with one of my hobbies or any form of creativity. Which has led to major change in my life.
I now express my creativity daily, in whichever way feels right at the time, and my life feels more vibrant because of it – not grey and dull and like the only thing I live for is to work and use my talent to complete other people’s projects.
But slowly, throughout March, I fell out of this routine.
I decided to treat myself to a weekend of sleeping in after waking up at that time throughout February – the same way I’d treated myself to a weekend of sleeping in after waking up at the established time every day of January.
I expected to get right back into waking up at 5 throughout March after that weekend, but I didn’t for a couple of days. Sleeping in that weekend turned into me sleeping in a few extra days that week. Then I returned to waking up at 5:55 for one day, slept in the next, woke up at the desired time the next day, slept in the next, and it continued that way throughout the entirety of March.
