Manifestation 101: Thinking as VS Thinking From – There’s A Difference

I used to spend a lot of time wondering why things weren’t manifesting for me, even though I spent my days robotic affirming, saying affirmations that matched the version of me who already had my desire’s thoughts, and thinking positively overall.

For the longest time, I thought I was doing everything right just because I was repeating affirmations, yet nothing was showing up, no matter how long I spent repeating them. And it was the same with other methods. Visualizing, scripting, and everything else you could possibly think of—none of it worked. And why?

Because I wasn’t being the person who already had my desires. But more specifically—and in this article we’ll cover the fact that—I wasn’t actually thinking from that version of myself’s perspective. I was technically thinking as that version of me would, but I wasn’t thinking from that version of me—and there’s a difference between the two.

It seems super obvious to me now, but back then, this was a blind spot that I just couldn’t seem to see, and I don’t doubt that there are tons of other people out there who are missing this detail as well.

For those who don’t know how to be the person who already has their desires, I’m hoping this article will assist you with one aspect of that. And for those who think they are already being the version of themself who has their desires, yet are still seeing no results, hopefully this is the thing that you’re missing. I hope that reading this article will make all the difference and help you finally bridge the (illusory) gap between your current self and your desired self!

So, with all that being said, keep reading to learn the difference between thinking as and thinking from the version of you who already has their desires!

Disclaimer

This article isn’t here to overcomplicate the law of assumption or make manifestation seem harder than it is. I’m sharing my personal perspective and what helped me personally start getting results when things felt stuck. I needed this spelled out for me because although it probably should’ve been obvious to me from the get-go, it wasn’t.

The contents of this article may seem like common sense and obvious, old news to some people, while others may view it as an overcomplication because “all you have to do is understand that it’s already done. Everything else is extra.” Again, I’m just sharing a distinction that it took me a long time to make and that helped me and will hopefully help other people.

Different people come to understand manifestation in different ways, and I’m hoping this article reaches the people who it could benefit. I hope this article can make things click into place for those who need it.

As always, use your own discernment, take what resonates, and leave the rest. And if you’ve already been manifesting your desires with no issues, you’re all good already! You don’t need to do anything differently, and this article isn’t for you.

Now, for those of you who want to know more about thinking as VS thinking from, keep reading!

What Does It Mean to “Think As” Your Desired Self?

Most of us are extremely familiar with the concept of thinking as your desired self. For me, thinking as your desired self is only one half of the equation, and it involves thinking in affirmations. As we know, affirmations are just (some of) your new thoughts. So, by repeating affirmations, you’re essentially rehearsing (half of) the thoughts that your ideal self would think.

For example, if you want to manifest being wealthy, you would think as the wealthy version of yourself by repeating affirmations such as:

🌟“I am rich.”

🌟“I am wealthy.”

🌟“Money loves me.”

🌟“My bank account is so full.”

🌟“I have so much money.”

🌟“Money keeps chasing me down.”

🌟“I love money.”

🌟“I have such a healthy relationship with money.”

🌟“I am so deserving of all the money I have and more.”

🌟“I love that I have more money than I can possibly spend.”

🌟“I keep getting random deposits.”

🌟“People love giving me money.”

🌟“Why is it so easy for me to make money?”

🌟“Everything I spend comes back to me multiple by 10.”

🌟“I have the career opportunities I’ve always wanted, the job I’ve always wanted, the business I’ve always wanted, and the passive income I’ve always wanted. I am so grateful for that!”

These affirmations help train your subconscious mind to accept a new story. They’re great for rewiring limiting beliefs, interrupting negative self-talk, building confidence, shifting your mental dialogue, and giving your brain a new script to follow.

As we know, affirmations are great to use when we need a quick redirect from negative thoughts or want to cultivate a more positive internal conversation, change our beliefs, and manifest our desires.

You can robotic affirm, focus affirm, have rampages, or try other affirmation techniques! There are various styles, methods, techniques, etc, for affirming, and of course, you can use the ones you feel work best for you.

How to Affirm: Different Types of Affirmations That Actually Work

What Is A Rampage? Manifest Using This Powerful Manifestation Technique

Common Manifestation Terms You Should Know When Manifesting Your Desires

But while “thinking as” is essential when manifesting our desires, let’s discuss the limitations of *only “*thinking as,” and how important the oftentimes overlooked act of “thinking from” is.

The Limitations of Only Thinking As

When I was only thinking in affirmations, AKA “thinking as,” I was leaving out a huge piece of the “puzzle.”

I would saturate my mind with affirmations like, “I’m so wealthy,” “I have too much money in my bank account,” “I don’t mind spending money because I know it’s so easy to get and will come back to me instantly since there’s plenty enough to go around,” and “I keep receiving money totally at random,” and don’t get me wrong, I would repeat affirmations like this almost 24/7, for hours every day, because I truly did make sure to think as the version of me who had it from the time I woke up until the time I went to bed.

But at the same time, as I went throughout my day and lived my life as one does, I would also be thinking thoughts that reflected a polar opposite financial situation, even in between affirming Random thoughts about random things, like:

🌟“I should try to work more hours this week so I can get a couple of more dollars in my paycheck.”

🌟“I wish I could get some Wendy’s, but I should probably save that $20 in case I need it for something else later.”

🌟“I wish I could afford to go to Beyonce’s concert.”

🌟“I wish I could afford the new BTS merch.”

🌟“Christmas is months away, but I should honestly start saving now so I can make sure I can get everyone Christmas gifts.”

🌟“I wish I could move into my own apartment. I’ll be so happy when I finally can.”

🌟“I’m already burnt out and struggling to keep up with my work as it is, but I should start searching for more clients and applying to more jobs just in case.”

🌟“I really hope this client hires me because I NEED the extra money.”

🌟“I’m not even gonna check my bank account…I don’t even want to look at it.”

🌟(Joking with my mom) “I want to go browsing, but I may as well just stay at home because I wouldn’t be able to get anything if I saw something I wanted anyway,”

🌟(Having small talk with a stranger) “Gas prices went up by 5 cents per gallon…It’s so expensive nowadays!”

*🌟(*Reading the news) “Wow, the job market and economy sucks right now…These are really scary times. I need to save more. I need to work more, so I can save more. I need to—”

🌟(Scrolling through Twitter & laughing) “Somebody made a tweet about how broke they are. Let me retweet this ASAP; I can relate!”

🌟(Scrolling through TikTok) “Someone made a TikTok talking about how lost they feel and how they feel like such a failure because they’re a certain age and they don’t make the kind of money they think they should be making by now…Let me hop in the comments and tell them how much I can relate!”

🌟(Listening to music) “This person is rapping about how much money they make and how luxurious their life is…I’m so jealous, I wish I could relate but—”

Do these thoughts match up with the affirmations I listed previously? Do these thoughts match up with the version of me who I thought I was being the whole time—the version of me who is already wealthy? Cause I definitely don’t think so.

The examples above show that even while I was thinking as the version of me who’s wealthy (AKA using affirmations constantly and consistently making the effort to think positive thoughts), I was not thinking from that version of me—because if I were, I never would have had thoughts like that.

I didn’t even realize I was thinking and speaking in a way that directly contradicted the fact that I already had my desires, because when you spend decades thinking and speaking about things a certain way, it becomes second nature to you, and it’s like you tune it out and don’t even notice it anymore.

You become used to it, and totally oblivious to it as a result, which is why—despite the fact that it may seem obvious as you read this—it took me so long to realize how contradictory these words were to my affirmations, and how I wasn’t actually living in the end because if I was, I wouldn’t have been thinking thoughts like this.

I was truly blinded and completely unaware of it despite how agonizingly careful and intentional I was with my affirmations, and making sure that I was repeating them constantly. To me, it seemed like I was doing everything right. Saying my affirmations, refusing to ask why it was taking things so long to manifest because I refused to acknowledge time—and I swore up and down that I was keeping a good mental diet.

But truthfully, there were quite a few things that I was missing or “doing wrong” during this time, and thinking from the perspective of the version of myself who already had her desires was one of the things that I was definitely missing.

(Not validating myself and giving myself confirmation was another one, but we’ll have to discuss that in a different article!)

Once I finally noticed this, I realized just how important “thinking from” actually is when it comes to manifesting your desires. It’s the missing piece of the puzzle, and the second half of the equation!

Keep reading to find out what “thinking from” entails!

What Does It Mean to “Think From” the Version of You Who Has It?

Thinking from means assuming the perspective, mindset, and reactions of the version of you who already has what they want. This is the second—and equally as important—piece of the “puzzle,” and one that many of us, unfortunately, forget.

It’s not about just saying “I am wealthy.” It’s about thinking from a wealthy person’s perspective and reacting as the person who already lives that reality—not just when you’re having saturation sessions, but at all times.

This is about more than just saying affirmations. It’s about getting into the habit of paying attention to every thought you have and asking yourself if they truly match up to the ones the version of you who already has your desires would have.

Thinking from is about responding to circumstances and situations in the way that version of you would—which seems obvious, but for a lot of people, it’s not. We get so caught up in our old way of thinking that sometimes we forget that when we’re changing who we identify as, we have to change how we think, act, and respond, even in situations or during times where we’d normally do those things absent-mindedly.

Thinking As + Thinking From – When Used Together

As we established earlier, I was “thinking as” but was not “thinking from,” which meant I was directly contradicting myself and was not, in fact, already being the version of me who was wealthy even though I thought I was. Now, let’s take a look at what it looks like when you’re intentional with your affirmations and “thinking asand when you’re “thinking from” the desired perspective:

🌟“I should try to work more hours this week so I can get a couple of more dollars in my paycheck.”“I’m glad I don’t have to worry about how many hours I work because I’m wealthy regardless.”

🌟“I wish I could get some Wendy’s, but I should probably save that $20 in case I need it for something else later.”“I’m going to get myself whatever I want to eat.”

🌟“I wish I could afford to go to Beyonce’s concert.”“I should start deciding which of Beyonce’s concerts I want to attend and get ready to get my tickets.”

🌟“I wish I could afford the new BTS merch.”“I need to take the time this weekend to look through BTS’ recent merch drops and see what I want to buy.”

🌟“Christmas is months away, but I should honestly start saving now so I can make sure I can get everyone Christmas gifts.”“I miss the Holiday season so I can start browsing for Christmas gifts right now, but honestly, I can wait until November or December if I want to.”

🌟“I wish I could move into my own apartment. I’ll be so happy when I finally can.”“I’m so happy I can afford to move into my own apartment. I’m going to start browsing and figure out which one I’d like.”

🌟“I’m already burnt out and struggling to keep up with my work as it is, but I should start searching for more clients and applying to more jobs just in case.”“Thank God I can take the time to rest as much as I want to. Since I’m wealthy, I don’t have to worry about finding more work when I already have a lot on my plate.”

🌟“I really hope this client hires me because I NEED the extra money.”“It’d be cool if this new client hires me since nobody else can complete their project as well as I can. I’m sure they’ll realize they want to work with me—but if not, that’s fine. I already have plenty of money and plenty of clients as it is.”

🌟“I’m not even gonna check my bank account…I don’t even want to look at it.”“I’m not even gonna check my bank account…I swear, I’m obsessed with looking at it since I get so happy seeing how much money is in there. I check my bank account more than social media these days! I’m not gonna open it this time though…I already know I have thousands more in there than I did the last time I checked anyway.”

~~🌟(Joking with my mom) “I want to go browsing, but I may as well just stay at home because I wouldn’t be able to get anything if I saw something I wanted anyway,”~~ → “I want to go browsing, but should I? I always end up coming home with a hundred sacks…”

~~🌟(Having small talk with a stranger) “Gas prices went up by 5 cents per gallon…It’s so expensive nowadays!”~~ → “Gas prices went up? I didn’t even notice. I can’t remember the last time I paid attention to the cost of gas or anything else, honestly.”

~~🌟(Reading the news) “Wow the job market and economy sucks right now…These are really scary times. I need to save more. I need to work more, so I can save more. I need to—”~~ → “Wow, everyone’s saying the job market and economy sucks right now, but I can’t tell. I keep getting job offers left and right, and I’ve never made more money than I’m making right now! I guess different people have different experiences…”

🌟(Scrolling through Twitter & laughing) “Somebody made a tweet about how broke they are. Let me retweet this ASAP; I can relate!”“Someone made a tweet about how broke they are. Honestly, I can’t relate, but I hope their financial situation gets better soon.”

🌟(Scrolling through TikTok) “Someone made a TikTok talking about how lost they feel and how they feel like such a failure because they’re a certain age and they don’t make the kind of money they think they should be making by now…Let me hop in the comments and tell them how much I can relate!”“Somebody made a TikTok talking about how lost they feel and how they feel like such a failure because they’re a certain age and they don’t make the kind of money they think they should be making by now…I can’t imagine what it must be like to feel like that. I’m so grateful for my financial success! I hope that person experiences this kind of success, too.”

🌟(Listening to music) “This person is rapping about how much money they make and how luxurious their life is…I’m so jealous, I wish I could relate but—”“I love listening to music like this because I relate to it so much!”

You see, there’s a world of difference.

And you may be thinking, “Yeah, but obviously I can’t actually afford to buy or do certain things right now, so…?”

Tell yourself that you are doing or have done those things anyway. Next time you think about those concert tickets you said you were going to buy, tell yourself that you did buy them. Every time you think of the concert going forward, think as if you’re going or have gone.

Stay consistent and stick to it. Give yourself the validation. It may feel difficult or silly right now. You may feel like you’re “being delusional” or “lying to yourself,” but hey, it works.

Key Differences Between Thinking As VS Thinking From Summarized

For me, the distinction between the two is easier to understand when I think of it this way: “Thinking as” is a shift in language, while “thinking from,” is a shift in perspective.

Compare and contrast:

SummaryThinking AsThinking From
What it meansUsing affirmations (1st half of the puzzle).Embodying the mindset of + thinking from the perspective of the version of you who already has it. (2nd half of the puzzle)
DepthSurface-level reprogrammingDeep identity shift
Importance Essential Essential

You can think as someone without fully thinking from them, but when you combine the two, that’s when everything clicks into place.

How to Start Thinking From the Version of You Who Has It

Now you know the difference between the two, as well as the importance. But you may be wondering…How exactly do you start thinking from? Especially when it feels as if you’re making a big leap. When you’re affirming that you’re wealthy, but your 3D circumstances reflect an extremely tight financial situation that you have to be faced with daily…How can you think from a wealthy person’s perspective or respond to these circumstances the way a wealthy person would?

Acknowledge, Accept, Decide, and Repeat

Something else we’ll have to have a more in-depth discussion about in another article is acknowledging, accepting and deciding—and how important it is for you to do those things when manifesting. But we’ll keep it brief for the time being.

The first step to “thinking from,” at least in my opinion, is acknowledging your circumstances. You don’t have to avoid them like the plague or pretend they’re not there. If you’re affirming that you’re wealthy but your 3D is showing you that you have $0 in your bank account, you can acknowledge that. Acknowledgment can be as simple as saying, “I’m being shown that I have $0 in the bank right now.”

The next step is to accept it. It’s fine to say, “Okay, so this is what the 3D is showing me right now, and I accept that.” There’s really nothing you can do but accept it. It is what it is at the moment, but we all know things can change in an instant, right?

So, the next thing you want to do is make a decision. What is it that you want and have decided to have? Wealth? Okay then.

“I’ve decided to be wealthy. I’ve decided to experience having wealth. I’ve decided to experience getting to enjoy opening my bank account and getting to know that I have more money than I can spend. I get to have money. I get to have a surplus of it, and I get to experience being stress-free, knowing that I can afford everything I need, everything I want, and more. I am now a wealthy person. I get to be someone who is wealthy, and I get to be shown that I am wealthy. That is my story now. That is my assumption now. I assume I am wealthy—and I know that my assumptions always have to be proven true. So, I know it’s already done, I know I already have it, and I know that I am now officially a wealthy person.”

Now you’re going to repeat these 4 steps as many times as it takes. You will continuously return to the state of the wish fulfilled, no matter what. I don’t care if you wake up crying every day because of how things look outwardly. You will continue to acknowledge and accept your circumstances, and continuously make the decision that, “I don’t care—I know I have what I want regardless, and I know I get to experience being wealthy. I am assuming I am a wealthy person, and I know that I am wealthy.”

(Note: Acknowledging and accepting doesn’t mean dwelling on circumstances, constantly reacting to them, constantly saying things aren’t the way you want them to be, etc. It just means understanding that, regardless of what you see or don’t see, things are the way you say they are. If you’re saying you’re wealthy, then you are, regardless of anything. So you don’t need to be afraid of 3D circumstances, negative thoughts, or anything else. They have no power over you, and they do not matter one bit. You’re still wealthy regardless.)

Quick Note: Get Back On Track

Sometimes we tend to fall off the wagon. We think as and from for a few days, and then we revert back to old, negative thought patterns. When you notice this has happened, you don’t have to feel like you’ve “ruined your manifestation” or “set yourself back” or anything else.

You can just jump back on the wagon.

When you notice you’ve slipped, just casually remind yourself, “Oh, wait! Why am I literally so funny? I forgot that I already have…” and return to the state of the wish fulfilled. Continue to think as and from.

It doesn’t have to be a big deal or feel like you’ve done something wrong. Just get back to it.

Nothing can ruin or prolong your manifestation unless you assume it does.

Think As and Shift Your Thoughts & Reactions

Most of us already know how to think as.

Affirm, affirm, affirm. Robotic affirm, have rampages—whatever you want to do.

The next step is to shift your thoughts and reactions.

What do you usually think, and how do you usually respond to seeing unexpected bills in the mail? Now what would the wealthy version of you think and how would they respond?

What do you usually think, and how do you usually respond when you hear people talking about the outrageous price of eggs? Now what would the wealthy version of you think and how would they respond?

What do you usually think, and how do you usually respond to seeing a restaurant’s commercial on TV and seeing a new meal you’d like to try? Now what would the wealthy version of you think and how would they respond?

What do you usually think, and how do you usually respond to scrolling online and seeing people talk about how expensive everything is? Now what would the wealthy version of you think and how would they respond?

The version of you who has $0 in the bank thinks and responds totally differently to these things than the version of you who has, say, $100k in the bank does. A person with $0 is an entirely different person from someone with $100k.

Remember that and make a habit of asking yourself how the wealthy version of yourself would think and respond every time you have so much as a passive thought or deal with any circumstance. Start asking yourself whether you are thinking or responding from a place of fear or from fulfillment, and start choosing thoughts that align with the latter. Make daily choices that reflect that mindset, even in small ways, and start thinking and responding as that wealthy version would on top of thinking as them, and you will see a huge shift.

Apply this to anything you want. Not just wealth, but for any other desire as well.

To some people, this may sound tedious, but it becomes easier and easier the more you do it—and the same way you automatically think and respond to situations a certain way without even having to think about it now? That’s the same way you’ll begin thinking and responding to situations from a wealthy person’s perspective, without even thinking about it, the more you practice.

Speaking of practice…

Practice

Practice makes perfect. As I mentioned above, you can practice “thinking from” at any moment, after every thought, every interaction, and every circumstance that arises. But another way to practice thinking from is by doing activities.

Scripting is one of the most common examples. Writing about your desires in past or present tense, as if you already have them, works like a charm. If you wanted to, you could have a 30-day scripting challenge where you write a daily diary entry as the wealthy version of yourself, simply writing about their day-to-day life and the things they get to have, do, or experience. You could even write about your current circumstances from that version of you’s perspective—write about how they think of it or respond to it.

If you don’t like scripting, of course, you can do visualization or have inner conversations instead.

How to Manifest By Using Inner Conversations

Can’t Visualize When Manifesting? Here’s How To Visualize

I personally enjoy doing various other activities that help me practice thinking from my ideal self’s perspective and actually being that person. I like to think of it as a bit of exposure therapy. For example, you could ask yourself, “What does the wealthy version of me spend their time doing?”

There’s a vast number of answers, and all of them can lead to fun, lengthy saturation sessions.

Examples:

🌟The wealthy version of you can afford their dream home, so they spend their time browsing for furniture, researching moving companies, trying out paint samples, watching home decor videos, learning about construction, browsing for housewarming invitations, and more.

🌟The wealthy version of you can afford designer clothes, so they spend much of their time browsing for high-quality designer items, researching designers, reading about the best recently-released designer items, etc.

🌟The wealthy version of you can afford to eat whatever and wherever they want, so they spend a lot of time learning about new restaurants, watching food reviews, making a list of all the restaurants they want to visit, and all the foods they want to try, etc.

🌟The wealthy version of you can afford to visit the spa whenever they want, so they spend time looking into various spa treatments, deciding which ones they want, planning weekend getaways to the spa, finding the best spas nearby, or making plans to travel out of state just to visit the perfect spa (because they can, so why not?)

The list goes on and on. Start doing the things the wealthy version of you would be doing right now. Start being that version of yourself. A lot of people feel hopeless, uncertain, or like it’s impossible to be someone who’s wealthy when they’re not. They wonder how they can behave like a wealthy person with nothing in their bank account.

I promise you, it’s more than possible. You don’t have to go out and start buying things just for the sake of being a wealthy person, as most people assume you have to.

You can plan, organize, research, think, respond, etc., the way they would right now, though.

Preparation is underrated in manifestation.

If your desire is to be wealthy and you know one of the things you’d like to do if you were wealthy is take a long vacation, then start preparing for that vacation right now. Do the research. Figure out where you want to go. Look into plane tickets and hotels. Figure out whether or not you need to buy new luggage, make a packing checklist, and start browsing for pet-sitters. Do everything the version of you who’s taking that vacation would do—and don’t think you’re doing it “for no reason” or “just for fun” or “just to waste time,” or anything else like that. Take it seriously and understand you’re doing these things in preparation because you know you are wealthy and you know you are going on that vacation. That’s a fact.

More Help

Even when I understood the importance of “thinking from,” I still struggled with the how. Especially when it came to specific desires, and especially when it came to trying to figure out activities to do that would reflect the kind of activities my ideal self would be doing. It was a frustrating struggle that made me feel as if it were impossible to manifest.

Remember:

🌟Use affirmations to build the foundation and redirect your mindset.

🌟Use embodiment to anchor that identity into your daily experience.

And try this: for the next 24 hours, act and react from the version of you who already has it. Think as and think from.

FAQ

What’s the main difference between thinking as and thinking from?

Thinking as uses affirmations to shift your mindset, while thinking from involves embodying the perspective of someone who already has their desire. It’s a shift from repetition to identity.

Do I have to pick between the two?

Not at all. The two work best when used together.

How do I know if I’m just thinking as but not from?

If you’re saying affirmations but still making decisions from, reacting from, or feeling like your old self, you’re likely staying in the as mode without fully stepping into the from perspective.

How do I start thinking from if I don’t believe it yet?

Start small. Practice responding to daily events like your desired self would. Script as them. Use inner conversations. You don’t need full belief to start.

What if I mess up and fall back into old patterns?

Simply notice it, acknowledge it, and return to the mindset of your desired self. It can be as simple as saying, “Oh, how silly of me, I forgot that I already have…”

What if Nothing is Showing Up Yet, Even Though I’ve Been Thinking As and From for a Long Time?

If you’re asking this question, I can tell you exactly why it isn’t showing up: You’re not being the person who already has it. The version of you who already has it isn’t asking where it is. That person is busy enjoying it, living with it, knowing that it’s theirs.

Do you go to a drive-in, order food, pay for it, pull up to the window, and then start crying, second-guessing whether or not you’ll actually receive it, frantically looking around, and asking where the food is when you don’t see it within two seconds?

I really hope not.

You know you have the food, and you’re confident in the fact that you have the food because you literally just know that you have it. And you knew you had it the second you placed your order and paid for it, so you weren’t crying and looking around for it before it was handed to you.

Instead, you were chilling in the car, listening to music, scrolling through your phone, or talking to your family and friends while your food was being prepared. You could probably already taste it, and I’m sure you were already planning what to watch while you ate it, or even what to do after you did.

Stop frantically looking around, trying to figure out where your desire is, “if” you’re going to get it, and when. Understand that you already have it, enjoy living as the person who already has it, and have fun planning what you’re going to do now that you have it.
